Sewbot

Sewbots are the automated sewing machines which could drastically reduce the need for human garment workers. In other words sewbots are the disruption in waiting for the fashion industry.

For companies like Chinese clothing manufacturer Tianyuan Garments Company, who produces clothing for Adidas and Armani, this automated sewing technology has allowed them to open their newest factory in Arkansas, not China.
The automated sewing robots reduce the need for sewing laborers. In the case of Tianyuan’s new factory, three to five people will work each of the 21 robotic production lines. This a labor decrease of 50-70% compared to the 10 workers on a conventional line.

How does it work

The “sewbots,” or sewing robots, reduce production costs, increase quality, cut lead times and allow brands to take back control of their manufacturing process. In sewbots, there is a capability to change how apparel is made.

MERITS OF SEWBOT

Sewbots may be the answer to hunt for the swarm of cheaper labors and delivery of better quality more efficiently than humans.
Benefits to automation include more reliability and fewer variations in stitch quality.
When it goes in the production environment, it will be at the same speed as a human sewer.
Unlike a human sewer, however, robots do not need breaks and are rarely subject to error.
According to a January 2017 report released by the McKinsey Global Institute, tasks are likely to be automated by 2055 from predictable physical activities to data collecting and processing.

Demerits of sewbots

But, what is the alternative for the workers who support their entire families and will be laid off the jobs because of this automation?
So, the bottom-line question that needs to be answered is whether a few robots will exempt the suffering that unemployment will bring to these workers? Should an attempt be made to equip the hunger and homelessness that might follow the closing of the factories?
