ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

Introduction

Electronics and communication discipline now has a distinct relevance in the realm of today's technology and the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was started in the year 1980 with an intake of 25 students. The department also runs one post graduate program, M.Tech in Digital Electronics and Communication Systems which got incepted in the year 2011 with an intake of 18 students. Now the intake for Undergraduate and postgraduate programs has been increased to 120 and 24 in the year 2013 respectively. The department has expertise in the areas of, Cryptography & Network Security, Wireless Sensor Networks, Image Processing, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. The Electronics and communication department has been recognized as the research centre by VTU for pursuing Ph.D. and M.Sc Engineering.

# Program Educational Objectives : - The Graduates will be able to:
PEO - 1 To work professionally with the necessary conceptual knowledge and technical & soft skills in Electronics and Communication domain imbibing ethical, societal and environmental commitment.
PEO - 2 To analyse and solve Electronics & Communication problems by applying basic principles of Mathematics, Science & Engineering using advanced tools and techniques.
PEO - 3 To pursue higher education, to explore research potential and to contribute to professional development in Electronics, Communication and IT domains.

# Program Specific Outcomes : - Engineering Graduates will be able to:
PSO - 1 Specify, design, build and test analog, digital and embedded systems.
PSO - 2 Understand and architect wired and wireless analog and digital communication systems as per specifications, and determine their performance.

PO - 1 Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO - 2 Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
PO - 3 Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
PO - 4 Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
PO - 5 Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
PO - 6 Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
PO - 7 Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO - 8 Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

Department has an air conditioned seminar hall with 150 seating capacity. It is acoustically designed for good audio listening.

Department Library

The department has well maintained library with around 2118 books. The lists of previous year’s projects are made available in the department library with project reports. Along with Laboratory Manuals, Journals / Magazines, IP based e – journals access, Data Sheets, Power Point Presentation, handouts, Course notes, Bound Volumes, Project Reports, conference proceedings are made available in the Department Library.

Scope & objectives

This Forum provides ample opportunity to students to discover the talent hidden in them. This forum gives a platform to students, to exhibit technical skill, presentation skill, communication skill in organising various events for students in the technical field.

Dept Forum Newsletter/Magazine

Department publishes news letter “SAIL [Spectrum Association Information Letter]” periodically. It gives wide exposure to the students to express and share technical knowledge and also gives the bird view of department activities, achievements of staff and students.

List of Meritorious awards:

  • Under the banner of Spectrum toppers in each section is awarded with staff of E&C (SEC) Award.
  • Dr. S. V. Sathyanarayana, Professor E &CE, instituted VLB merit scholarship in the name of his parents. Under this scheme, TWO merited and economically challenged students of third year are awarded with cash prize.
  • Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Former Principal, JNNCE and current Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering Shimoga, instituted Sri.S.Rajaram Kunte Family Scholarship in the name of parents for second year students of E & C department. This scholarship is given to ONE economically challenged student who has aggregate of around 65% and above in SSLC, PUC, First and Second Semester B.E. (without any backlogs in any semester.
  • Mr. Satish Kumar. H. G, Instructor, E &CE, instituted GMS merit scholarship in the name of his parents. Under this scheme, ONE merited student of third year is awarded with cash prize.

Activities :

VTU Research Centre in the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering was started in the year 2006-, with provision for Ph.D. (Full Time / Part Time), Integrated Ph.D. and M.Sc. (Engg.). Since then the research facility is available for research scholars to carry out research in their specific area. Students and research scholars are encouraged to take up inter disciplinary research in various domains like cryptography, Image Processing, Wireless Sensors Network, Deep Learning. Two faculty members are guiding Ph.D. students in various fields. Open Seminars for Research Scholars will be conducted at regular intervals to assess their Research progress.

Events and Seminars/Workshops

Department has IETE Student Forum (ISF) is a student membership forum under IETE, New Delhi. Many co-curricular activities like student development programs, workshops, seminars, hackathons are being orgnaized to augment the curriculum delivery and to give exposure in state-of-the-art topics & technologies. This also helps the students to develop inter personal skills, communication skills, team building & leadership, societal and environmental concern.

Innovations by the Faculty in Teaching and Learning

To enhance the quality of teaching-learning process, expanding the range and accessibility of learning experiences offered to student’s pedagogical techniques are adapted by the faculty members. Faculty members use power point presentations, video lectures, simulations and illustrative examples in their teaching. The study materials are made available to students in the digital media through college weblinks. Faculty members undergo MOOC & NPTEL courses.
