The Society was founded with the vision and commitment of local leaders such as Mr. S.V. Krishna Murthy Rao, former Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha; Mr. H.S. Rudrappa, former Karnataka Minister; Mr. P. Murudappa; Mr. R.K. Jayatheerthachar; Mr. S. Narasimha Murthy, senior advocates; and Mr. S.R. Nagappa Shrestty, ex-MLA and social worker, among others. These leaders worked tirelessly to build the institution in alignment with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision. The NES established its first independently managed high school in Shimoga in 1946, constructing its own building with the support of the local community. In 1954, NES took a significant step toward promoting girls’ education by opening the first girls' high school in the district. Over time, the society expanded, establishing schools in rural areas to meet the educational needs of the local population

Many illustrious leaders, statesman, personalities have visited the National education Society and have blessed by appreciating the dedicated service of the society. Among them are Honorable Dr. Rajendra Prasad, former President of India, Philosopher educationist Dr. S. Radha Krishnan, former president of India, Shri Lal Bahadhur Shastry, Former Prime Minister of India, Sri Jayachamaraj wodeyar, former Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Vinoba Bhave a great leader of Sarvodaya movement, Acharya Tulsi leader of Anavarath Movement are few among them.
Despite facing numerous challenges during and after India’s freedom struggle, the National Education Society remained steadfast in its mission to promote education. Over the years, it has expanded significantly, establishing a number of professional colleges across the district. Today, the society runs 36 educational institutions, serving over 18,000 students and employing a dedicated team of 1,000 staff members.From primary and secondary education to pre-university programs, the society has played a crucial role in shaping young minds. It has also made significant contributions to higher education by offering quality courses in Engineering, Law, Commerce, Pharmacy, Applied Sciences, and Home Science through its well-established colleges. With a commitment to excellence, the National Education Society continues to empower students and uphold its legacy in the field of education.
Over the years, thousands of alumni from these institutions have earned national and international recognition in their respective fields, bringing pride to their alma mater. The society takes great satisfaction in its commitment to providing quality education, ensuring that students
receive the best possible learning experience. Every year, a significant number of students graduate with distinction, achieving outstanding academic success.The society is led by a dedicated Executive Committee, whose directors have made it their life’s mission to drive its growth and uphold the vision of its founders. They continue to work tirelessly to enhance the institution, ensuring that students and staff have access to top-notch infrastructure and resources. By fostering both academic excellence and co-curricular development, the society remains steadfast in its goal of shaping well-rounded individuals ready to make a meaningful impact.
The Society is managed by an Executive Committee. The directors have taken the development of the Society as a life mission and are continuing the efforts to fulfill the aspirations of its founders.
It has provided all the necessary facilities with adequate infrastructure to students and staff to promote both curricular and co-curricular activities.

The National Education Society observed its Golden Jubilee during 1998, and dedicated a statue to Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shrestty, a man who devoted his life to the development of the society.
