COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Introduction

The Computer Science and Engineering department was established in the year 1991. Since then, the department has held a position of pride in JNNCE. The Department offers B.E., with an intake of 180 and PG course in M.Tech.(CSE) with an intake of 25. The department has well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty to provide quality industry tuned education to the students. The Department Infrastructure fulfils the requirements of academics, supports research and learning skills on the latest technologies. Department has six laboratories equipped with high end computer systems to carry out the lab sessions, projects and research activities. Special care is taken for each student by implementing mentor scheme. Apart from central library, books are issued to students using department library facility.

Computer Science department has a Research centre recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) established in the year 2003. Many research related activities such as conferences, workshops and training programs are organized by the department for both faculty and students. COSMOS- Computer Sc. Students forum in the department conducts lot of competitions for students to grab the extra-curricular talents hidden in students. Every year on an average 70% of students gets recruited in many reputed companies through campus placement cell.

Apart from College library, department has library facility for the benefit of students and staff. Books, project reports, seminar reports, conference proceedings, VTU question papers and E-copy of VTU syllabus are available in the library.

Activities carried out during 2018-19

The following technical events were conducted

A Hands–on workshop on, “Android Application Development using Kotlin”, was conducted on 16th and 17th March 2019 for final and pre-final year students. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Chetan K R, Asst. Professor, Dept. of CS & E.
A Technical Quiz was conducted on 29th March 2019.
A webinar on “Cloud Computing with AWS” was organized on 30th March 2019. Mr. Dhanjay Padmanabhacharya, Head in IT Company, Bangalore and Mrs. LipsaParida, AWS IT specialist delivered the talk. The webinar was conducted for pre final year students.
A Hackathon was conducted from 6th April 2018 to 10th April 2019. The students were given a task to develop an Android App, “JNNCE DARSHAN”, that provides information about JNNCE.
“COSMOSPARK”, an online portal was inaugurated during the COSMOS inauguration on 28th September 2018. COSMOSPARK was intended to ignite the students’ minds for creativity.
The following interval based events were conducted facilitate students to explore and exhibit the creativity and technical skills under COSMOSPARK.
1. COSMO CROSS- A technical crossword was asked to be solved using creative hints given. This was conducted on 3rd March 2019.
2. COSMO CUBULARY- This event conducted on 4th March, different images were given and students were asked to find appropriate term from Computer Science Vocabulary.
3. COSMO CHART- Students were given a problem Scenario and were asked to write flow chart. The event was conducted on 20th March.
4. COSMO CODING- Different problem scenario was given and students had to code them in C/Java/Python. The online coding events were conducted on 28th September 2018, 08th October 2018 and 5th April 2019.
Along with the technical events, a few co-curricular events were conducted as a part of cosmos. They were
1. Rangoli, Mehendi and Tattoo competitions to encourage the artists on 20th February 2019.
2. Various sport events were conducted to encourage sportspersons on 2nd March 2019.
3. The singers got a chance to exhibit their talent on 22nd March.
4. Friends participated in Twins Day on 29th March.
5. Lazy Dancing competition was conducted on 4th April to showcase creative Dancing.
The Cosmos wrapped up events on 3rd May with class event , “Atithi” and KhanaKhazna- cooking without Fire. These events were conducted to encourage whole class work as a group, coordinate and conduct small talent show.

Technical Magazine

Department publishes a magazine COSMOBYTE at the end of every academic year. The magazine comprises of summary of report on repertoire of activities carried out under department forum like technical talk, workshop, quiz, spot programming, essay writing, painting and others. The magazine also contains information regarding the proud moments of the department that includes student achievements in various curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The talents of students are also exhibited in magazine in form of their articles. The prize winners of various events, name of best outgoing student and academic toppers, reviews of few outgoing students about the department are also brought in the magazine. The magazine is released in Dept. Forum Valedictory function, hard copy of the magazine is recorded in the department and e-copy of the same is made available in the college website and also shared to students.

Research Initiatives

VTU Research Centre in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering was started in the year 2003, with provision for Ph.D. (Full Time / Part Time), and M.Sc. (Engg.) by research. Since then the research facility is available for research scholars to carry out research in their specific area. Students and research scholars are encouraged to take up inter disciplinary research in various domains like Image Processing and Pattern recognition, data mining, computer vision, Information security, Wireless Mobile Networks, natural language processing, networks etc., 22% of faculty members are guiding Ph.D. scholars in various fields of computer science in collaboration with other inter disciplinary research areas. Doctoral Committee meetings for Research Scholars are conducted at regular intervals to assess their Research progress. Department of CSE is engaged in developing state of the art technologies in collaboration with private/public sector organizations.

Impact of the MOU with industry resulted in providing internship and training program for both students and faculties. Also faculties have jointly submitted research proposal for funding agencies.

Department of Computer Science & Engineering has good placement record since its inception. Companies like TCS, Infosys, SocieteGenerale,Dell, EVIVE Health, Tech Mahindra, SLK Softwares etc have repeatedly recruited our students. Placement and CS & E department prepare students to face companies by providing additional training to polish their technical skills and personality development. The number of companies visiting the department has increased from 17 in 2016 to 46 in 2019. The number of students getting placed has increased and deprtment has a track record of more than 85% of eligible students being placed .
